Moreover, Carlo is the founder of the e-learning platform onlivedu.com where he has also launched his own design program which aims to a) develop a specific research in new topics in the design world and b) reach as many people as possible around the globe, giving the opportunities to the less fortunate to join advanced courses.
TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
I believe education is central to any sort of culture. I also believe that, as a teacher, I own my entire work to nobody but to my students. Provided there is not a fixed methodology to educate, I think you need to build your own way to gain the students’ trust - you can’t take for granted any curriculum or class. Indeed you need a path to start with but, as I always try to do, I ask myself “How can I make this or that class more engaging? How can I tell this or that concept in a different way? What are my tools? What other tools I can use?”
Before I start a class I assume a student has to be involved and no matter what it takes, my main goal is to pass a notion, an inspiration, an idea on the other side. Education is not about the quantity of hours you talk or about the final marks. Education is all about showing the students what they can do with the notions they’re learning. Education is about empowering people.
By all means - as a designer - I truly believe that an educational system which has a lot to do with creativity needs to be imprinted with tons of inputs, references and proofs that if you use your brain in the right way and develop your own Methodology you can create and design something great, unique and useful.
Regardless of what subject I’m teaching I always try to introduce something else in the picture - maybe is a story related to my personal experience or an anecdote about a designer I’ve read somewhere, a scene of a movie or a place I’ve been which could make them think about something and understand one of the most important notion in Creativity: inspiration can come from anywhere. I also often ask my students to talk about what they like and why, so I can use these information to build a more student-oriented lecture and surprise them with something that is directly related to their personal life.
Teaching isn't for me only at the benefit of the students but it all comes back to me. Teaching represent for me an opportunity. I have the chance to inspire a group of people, I can point them to a successful career and, hopefully, to a well designed world.
I’ve learned that as a student you’ll forget about the marks or about the boring hours and even about the notions, but you’ll never forget about that teacher who was trying hard to engage you with something. Well, trying to be that sort of teacher is a good reason for me to wake up in the morning and go do this job.
